Pregnancy Skincare

During pregnancy the skin takes on a different persona, due mainly to hormones and blood flow changes. Some women feel their skin is worse during this time whilst others say pregnancy has given their face and body a healthy glow. However, everyone has concerns over cosmetic ingredients; what to use and what to avoid. The risk area is materials that are readily absorbed by the skin – into the blood stream. The placenta does block certain ingredients out during pregnancy but that can change when the body is creating breast milk.

Chartered Chemist & Chartered Scientist Bruce Green advises the following is avoided in pregnancy:

Retinoids – Whilst Vitamin A can work wonders on the skin, there is evidence that it can interfere with foetal development and lead to birth defects.

Salicylic Acid – There is some evidence, often disputed, that high does can cause defects. Don’t take the risk.

Glycolic Acid - Small doses pose a low risk, but high doses: mixed evidence so don’t. The same applies to other AHA’s.

Benzol Peroxide – Although only a small percentage is absorbed, some health care professionals deem it as safe. I don’t due to a lack of data.

Hydroquinone – Adverse side effects on the foetus have been reported.

Essential Oils – The majority of Essential Oils are deemed safe. But and it’s a big but, many fragranced cosmetics contain a combination of oils – not just one – few Essential Oil cocktails have been thoroughly tested. So go fragrance free such as the SOS Serum Skincare range.

What about Sun Creams? – In principle it’s a very good plan to protect your skin from UV damage. But look for natural with physical sun blocking – Natural Minerals – Zinc Oxide / Titanium Dioxide and opt for one that is Fragrance Free. SOS SPF 50 Sun Cream would be my recommendation.

My Advice – For cosmetics during pregnancy and during breast feeding, think minimalistic. A short ingredient list that you can understand, an SPF rating and fragrance free.

Moisturise ~ Moisturise ~ Moisturise. Ultimate hydration is the key.

SOS H20 Day Cream SPF 30 & SOS SPF 50 Sun Cream are two ultimate examples of inspired formulations for pregnant and new mums.

Happy Days…and trouble-free nights!!

If in doubt about any cosmetic formulation or products, don’t take any risks. Ask a professional and always err on the side of caution.
